Review: ‘will.i.am – ‘Songs About Girls’’

The Black Eyed Peas may be all about getting the party started, but in his first solo outing, front man will.i.am has turned in an often introspective, downright sad collection about heartbreak and lost romance.

Most of the tracks on “Songs About Girls” are indeed about girls, but more along the lines of tales of heartbreak than tales of pursuit. Sporadically interrupted by party jams and club-ready tracks (“Get Your Money,” the mind-numbing single “I Got it From My Mama”), disc does possess a significant misfire, the global warming-themed “S.O.S. (Mother Nature).” Highlight is the subdued disco ditty “Impatient.”

Admirably, will.i.am leaves his rolodex behind and doesn’t give much room to guest-spots, although the ubiquitous Snoop Dogg shows up on the funky “Donque Song”.
