Notorious B.I.G. returns to charts

'Greatest Hits' disc takes top slot

Bows were big this week among the top 10 albums as five were debuts, with the late Notorious B.I.G.’s collection of “Greatest Hits” (Bad Boy) leading the way on the strength of 99,000 copies sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Disc is his second posthumous release to top the charts; “Life After Death,” released shortly after the rapper’s murder outside the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles 10 years ago this month, sold nearly 700,000 units in its first week.

Most recent sales sesh was the second consecutive week that featured artists all selling less than 100,000 discs.

Canadian indie rock group Arcade Fire’s second Merge effort, “Neon Bible,” entered at No. 2 with 92,000 discs sold, pushing last week’s chart-topper, Daughtry’s self-titled RCA album, to No. 3 (82,000) and Akon’s “Konvicted” (SRC/Universal) down a notch to fourth (76,000).

Country singer Gary Allan’s “Greatest Hits” (MCA Nashville) debuted at No. 5, selling 70,000, while pop-punk rockers Relient K’s fifth album in seven years, “Five Score and Seven Years Ago” (Gotee/Capitol), achieved their highest chart entry, at No. 6, with 64,000 albums sold.

The latest from alt-metal outfit Korn, “MTV Unplugged” (Virgin), logged in at the ninth slot on 51,000 records sold.

Norah Jones’ “Not Too Late” (Blue Note) fell from No. 2 last week to No. 7 (59,000); Fall Out Boy’s “Infinity on High” (Island) dropped from No. 4 to No. 8 (58,000); and Robin Thicke’s “The Evolution of Robin Thicke” (Interscope) completed the top 10, slipping from No. 5 (47,000).
