LONDON — MTV Networks Intl. is to bow a Warsaw-based pan-European high-definition channel next year.
The English-language service will feature original and acquired shows plus content from MTV, VH1 and Nickelodeon including “MTV Unplugged,” “VH1 Storytellers,” “CMT’s Crossroads,” the MTV Video Music Awards and the MTV Europe Music Awards.
A kids’ morning block will consist of Nickelodeon programs including “SpongeBob SquarePants,” “Avatar” and “Drake & Josh.”
The venture will be operated by MTVNI’s emerging markets group, and be based in Warsaw.
“Basing the new HD channel in Poland underlines our recognition of Central Eastern Europe as an increasingly important market, representing the biggest growth potential in the region,” said Bhavneet Singh, senior VP and managing director, emerging markets group, MTVNI.
It is not yet clear who will carry the channel. In Europe, HD TV is emerging slowly, but availability and take up are far behind the U.S. and parts of Asia.
