‘Kingz’ rules music charts

Houston rappers UGK open in top slot

UGK’s first album in five years, “Underground Kingz” (Jive), sold 160,000 copies to debut at No. 1 on the nation’s album sales chart.

Disc from the Houston rap duo of Bun B and Pimp C was the only album to top 100,000 in sales in the week ended Sunday, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Ft. Myers, Fla., rapper Plies, who penned Akon’s “I Wanna Love You,” saw his “Real Testament” (Slip-N-Slide/Atlantic) open at No. 2 on sales of 96,000.

The Jonas Brothers sold 69,000 copies of their sophomore disc, the first album to be released in the CDVU+ format. Coming in at No. 5, the release on Disney’s Hollywood Records features photos, lyrics and liner notes on the disc. Band has had four No. 1 singles on Disney Radio; TV appearances are slated for the last week of this month on “Miss Teen USA,” Disney Channel Summer Games Closing Ceremony and the Teen Choice Awards.

The only other top 50 debut was Fuel’s sixth album, “Angels & Devils” (Epic), which sold 15,000 to open at No. 42.

Last week’s No. 1, Common’s “Finding Forever,” took a 63% sales hit, dropping to No. 7 on sales of 58,000.

The “High School Musical 2” soundtrack hit stores Tuesday and Disney Channel starts airing telepic the Friday, providing a sales spike for the soundtrack of the original. Disc was the only top 50 title to post an increase from the week before — 3,000 units and five slots — moving to No. 28 on sales of 22,000. Album has sold more than 4 million copies.
