BEIJING — China’s growing stature on the international music circuit means local fans will get to hear the Nine Inch Nails at the Beijing Pop Music Festival on Sept. 8 and 9.
What the billing lacks in terms of cutting-edge contemporary big names, it makes up for in blue-blood punk heritage. The line-up reads like an indie hall of fame, and will do much to help build awareness of alternative rock in China, where people favor saccharine Taiwanese pop or stodgy local fare.
Marky Ramone, the only surviving band member of punk godfathers the Ramones, fellow punk pioneers the New York Dolls and goth behemoths Nine Inch Nails will feature at the event, due to take place in eastern Beijing’s Chaoyang Park.
Also due to appear are Suede warbler Brett Anderson and hip-hop legends Public Enemy, as well as local stalwart Cui Jian, grunge veteran Xie Tianxiao, and Beijing punk bands Brain Failure and Thin Man.
