Award winners, performers get a bump

The question pops up every year: What’s a Grammy worth in sales?

It’s a tough intangible, and this year’s show sent albums by performers and winners skyrocketing. While a win or an on-air perf delivers a sales bump, it appears some albums are not in a position to be helped.

Take the new artist category. Carrie Underwood won the trophy and performed in an Eagles tribute. Her disc sold 61,000 copies in the week after the kudoscast, up from 38,000, a 62% bump.

But the real winner was Corinne Bailey Rae, who was shut out in her three categories but performed in a trio setting. Her Capitol debut skyrocketed to 120,000 from 52,000.

James Blunt’s “Back to Bedlam” rose 61 slots to No. 47, selling 23,000 copies — up 14,000 after performing “You’re Beautiful” on the telecast.

Chris Brown participated in a James Brown tribute and certainly established himself as a sure-footed performer, but that only netted him a 2,000 unit boost from the previous week’s sales of 11,000. Imogen Heap’s “Speak for Yourself,” which hasn’t been in the top 200 this year, sold 5,000 copies last week to take No. 184.

Shakira did not win the pop collaboration trophy, but her performance of “Hips Don’t Lie” certainly helped propel “Oral Fixation Vol. 2″ (Epic) back into the top 200 — it reached No. 144 — on sales of 7,000.

Bob Dylan won two Grammys — contemporary folk/Americana album and solo rock vocal — and his “Modern Times” experienced a 2,400 unit leap to 8,000. Kirk Franklin also won two — gospel song and contemporary R&B gospel album — and his disc “Hero” returned to the top 200 selling 6,000. Also selling 6,000 copies was the winner of the compilation soundtrack, “Walk the Line,” on Windup.

But the band that had tongues wagging on Monday, the reunited Police, didn’t muster much in the way of record sales. Their greatest hits disc, “Every Breath You Take,” sold only 900 copies in the week ended Sunday, according to Nielsen SoundScan. That was a 300-copy boost from the week before.

The trio’s box set, “Message in a Bottle,” doubled in sales to 200. “Outlandos d’Amour,” their debut album which included the song they performed, “Roxanne,” sold 935 copies, a 120% bounce from the previous week’s tally of 424.
