‘School’ soundtrack at top of class

Disney Records release in top spot

On the heels of setting cable TV ratings records, Disney Channel’s “High School Musical 2” saw its soundtrack post the second-highest sales week of the year.

In its debut sesh, the Walt Disney Records release sold 615,000 copies, according to Nielsen Soundscan. Among 2007 releases, only Linkin Park’s “Minutes to Midnight” has sold more, 623,000.

Most impressively, “High School Musical 2” outsold the rest of the top 10, which collectively mustered sales of only 514,000. Digitally, 326,000 individual tracks were sold in the week ended Sunday, and 20,000 ringtones were sold as well.

The TV tuner’s “You Are the Music in Me” is at No. 9 on the single chart, having sold 60,000 downloads, the leader among the tuner’s six top-40 tracks. A separate track, “What Time Is It,” sold 25,000 physical singles in addition to its digital sales.

Arrival of the sequel sent the original on a 37% sales spike. The “HSM” soundtrack sold 30,000 copies, rising 12 slots to No. 16. The original, which was the biggest-selling album of 2006, now has a cume of 4.1 million.

If “HSM2” follows a sales pattern similar to that of Disney’s “Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus” soundtrack disc — and Disney takes advantage of the holiday season by introducing a “deluxe edition” in November — sales could hit 3.5 million.

The airing of a new episode of “Hannah Montana” bolstered sales for “Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus” — it sold 83,000 units — giving Disney the top two slots. With the Jonas Brothers selling 41,000 and snaring No. 8, the Disney Music Group had three albums in the top 10.

Another double-disc set enters right behind, as Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds’ two-CD set “Live at Radio City” (RCA/RMG) sold 70,000 copies to come in at No. 3. Matthews and Reynolds’ first live collection, “Live at Luther College,” moved 187,000 units in February 1999.

Other debuts included “Cexcells” (Interscope) from AFI side project Blaqk Audio, which sold 29,000 copies (No. 18); country tyro Luke Bryan’s “I’ll Stay Me” (Capitol Nashville), 25,000 (No. 24); Capitol’s collection of modern artists duetting with Dean Martin tapes, “Forever Cool,” 17,000 (No. 39); and Mae’s “Singularity” (Capitol), 17,000 (No. 40).

A remix of 2Pac music, “Nu Mixx Klazzics Vol. 2” (Koch), sold 15,000 (No. 45), and WC’s “Guilty by Affiliation” (Lench Mob Records) sold 14,000 (No. 49).
