Tamil’s slap heard around the world

Director strikes actress during film shoot

It was the slap heard around the industry.

Tamil director Samy struck actress Padmapriya during the shoot of “Mirugam” (Animal) last week because, he says, she just couldn’t get a scene right.

Padmapriya, a former risk consultant for GE and an award-winning thesp, promptly slapped back, registering a protest with actors association Nadigar Sangam. She says the director had been verbally abusing her for days before the slap.

Samy went on TV to say he thought a slap would help her cry on cue. But the explanation didn’t sway the Nadigar Sangam, the Tamil Producers Assn. or the Film Federation of South India, all of which have banned him from directing Tamil movies for a year.

As for “Mirugam,” Padmapriya told Indian website Rediff she’s committed to finishing the film, and the orgs are allowing Samy to complete it. So thesp and helmer will still get some face time together.
