Conspicuous spending rarely stands out in Hollywood. But even a town known for deep pockets took notice of a very pricey birthday greeting issued in Daily Variety on Sept. 21.
Turks and Caicos Premier Michael Misick bought a back-cover ad — traditionally one of the priciest pieces of real estate in the book — to wish his wife of 17 months, actress LisaRaye McCoy-Misick, a happy birthday. She’s also front and center in a two-page ad promoting the islands in the October issue of W.
Was Misick channeling Meshulam Riklis, the wealthy Israeli businessman who 25 years ago launched a pricey billboard campaign to showcase his actress wife, Pia Zadora? Hardly, says a rep for the first lady.
“Knowing Michael, he was just showing some love in a very public way,” says McCoy-Misick’s manager, Adam Robinson.
In fact, it was part of a larger celebration for the Chicago-born actress, whose credits include the UPN series “All of Me” and the MGM film “Beauty Shop.” The Caribbean leader also threw his wife, the half-sister of rapper Da Brat, a surprise 40th birthday gala at the Beverly Hills Hotel the same weekend as the ad. The fete drew 300 people, including Smokey Robinson and John Singleton.
So, will the onetime hip-hop video extra parlay her exposure into new TV and film projects? Not necessarily, says Robinson, adding that McCoy-Misick plans to next tackle a theater project and launch a youth beauty pageant.
