Australian bank refuses to shell out big bucks
Oz’s Macquarie Bank is so successful that it’s known colloquially as the Millionaire’s Factory.
But it’s not exactly shelling out big bucks to promote itself to the film community.
For the first time ever, script kudos at this year’s AFI Awards came with a cash prize — courtesy of Macquarie. A 30-second ad touting the bank’s involvement unspooled during the Nine telecast and on screens in the auditorium.
But when it was revealed that Macquarie’s cash prize was just A$10,000 — about $8,787 — bizzers reacted with stunned disbelief. Says one: “$50,000 might have been reasonable, $100,000 would have been impressive, $10,000 just made Macquarie look mean.”
Macquarie boss Alan Moss earns a $33 million salary.
