Kathy Griffin may have just been joking when she used the phrase, “Suck it, Jesus!,” but members of members of Pigeon Forge, Tenn.’s, Miracle Theater didn’t appreciate the irreverence.
The group, in its second season on a tuner about the life of Christ, spent $100,000 on an ad in USA Today chastising her.
Her comments, made during her acceptance of a Creative Emmy, were heavily edited by E! censors, but got plenty of play in the press.
“The ownership was so offended that they just moved some money from one of their budgets to do whatever they had to do to write the check,” says the theater’s general manager, Russ Hollingsworth. “They’re sort of borrowing from Peter to pay Paul.”
