Glasgow airport employer a national hero
On the eve of the U.K. bow of “Live Free or Die Hard,” it wasn’t John McClane but John Smeaton who was in the spotlight.
Smeaton, a baggage handler at Glasgow airport, has become an overnight hero for his two-fisted role in helping a policeman apprehend one of the would-be terrorists who drove a flaming Jeep into the Scottish airport terminal.
Tribute websites have mushroomed as Brits rush to applaud the regular Joe who helped kick the attacker into submission. Praising the “blitz spirit” of the “the one-man anti-terrorism unit” johnsmeaton.com trumpets, “That’s right Osama, this is how we do things in Raintown. … Here we take the law into our own hands. And feet.”
The site also is taking donations to buy ‘Smeato’ a celebratory pint of beer at his local pub. So far, over 1,200 well-wishers have wired $6 each meaning he’ll not go thirsty for some time.
