Horror mavens Eli Roth and Quentin Tarantino signed on to blurb Tim Palen’s new photography book “Guts,” but their quotes couldn’t run on the dust jacket. The entire cover is a photo of bloody entrails, artistically printed on satin.
Palen, whose photos have appeared in Premiere and Penthouse, is co-prexy of theatrical marketing at Lionsgate, where he’s designed eye-catching campaigns for horror pics such as “Hostel,” “Saw II” and “III” and “Bug.” His poster concepts are in the book alongside stylish shots of models such as Bijou Phillips — some beheaded, some intact.
Palen’s manifesto is to “put the art back in key art,” although on occasion his campaigns fall decidedly outside the MPAA’s standards of decency. Letters from the MPAA and Red Cross are interspersed among the pages.
On the title page, Tarantino calls Palen’s work “the perfect blend of splatter, porn and Diane Arbus.”
