Vineyard plants a few plays

'Piano Teacher,' 'Slug Bearers' added to sked

Off Broadway’s Vineyard Theater has set the first two offerings of its 2007-08 season, which kicks off with “The Piano Teacher” by Julia Cho (“Durango”) and continues with “The Slug Bearers of Kayrol Island (or The Friends of Dr. Rushower)”, a new tuner with book and animated backgrounds by cartoonist Ben Katchor (“Julius Knipl, Real Estate Photographer”) and songs by Mark Mulcahy.

Helmed by Kate Whoriskey, “Piano Teacher” centers on a former piano instructor whose life of making cookies and reliving old memories is threatened. Show begins previews in October and opens in early November.

“Slug Bearers,” directed by Bob McGrath (“Jennie Richee”), is set in Manhattan and on a tropical island of exploited factory workers. Tuner aims for a February 2008 opening.

Also on the Vineyard bill are lab productions of Adam Rapp’s “The Metal Children” and Tarell Alvin McCraney’s “Wig Out!,” as well as a workshop of developing tuner “The Burnt Part Boys” by Mariana Elder, Chris Miller and Nathan Tysen.
