Disney musical has sold unevenly
“Tarzan” won’t be swinging over Broadway much longer. The big-budget tuner from Disney Theatrical Prods. has posted a closing notice for July 8.
Shuttering ends a rocky run for “Tarzan,” which opened in May 2006 to mixed reviews. Musical, with songs by Phil Collins and book by David Henry Hwang based on the Disney animated pic, has sold unevenly throughout its time on the boards, never reaching the sales momentum of current Disney Theatrical hits “The Lion King” or “Mary Poppins.”
“The sales trends over the last few weeks just haven’t held up,” said David Schrader, managing director and chief financial officer of Disney Theatrical.
The Rialto version of “Tarzan” looks to be a rare misstep for the Mouse legit arm. Even the company’s “Aida,” which was not a long-running smash along the lines of “Beauty and the Beast” or “Lion King,” played a four-year run.
The two weeks’ closing notice for “Tarzan” is unusual for Disney and another indicator of the show’s struggling sales.
For other productions the company has announced the end of a run months in advance to capitalize on a resultant bump in receipts. The strategy is currently working well for “Beauty,” which announced six months ago it would end its 13-year run in July and is now logging impressive receipts in its final frames.
Helmed and designed by Bob Crowley (who won two Tonys earlier this month, one for “Poppins”), “Tarzan” is running in the Netherlands in a retooled staging. There is interest in the show in other markets as well, according to Schrader.
Even without “Tarzan” on the New York boards, Disney has a hefty legit workload. With Broadway sales of “Poppins” going strong, the org’s stage version of “The Little Mermaid” tries out in Denver this summer for a fall opening in Gotham, while an upcoming touring version of “High School Musical” looks poised to bring in big bucks on the road.
