Stephen Sondheim will have a chat with Frank Rich of the New York Times as part of UCLA Live’s 2007-08 season, which will also celebrate the 50th anniversary of a famed L.A. folk club.
The sixth annual Intl. Theater Festival will feature Ian McKellen starring in the Royal Shakespeare Company’s productions of “King Lear” and Chekhov’s “The Seagull” at Royce Hall in repertory Oct. 19-28.
Theater fest opens Sept. 18 with the National Theater of Scotland’s “Black Watch” at the Freud Playhouse. Fest will include the West Coast premieres of “medEia,”by Amsterdam’s Dood Paard, Sept. 19-22 at the McGowan Little Theater, and Erik Sanko’s “The Fortune Teller,” featuring music by Danny Elfman and Sanko, Oct. 18-28 at the Freud.
Poland’s Teatr Zar will perform “Gospels of Childhood” Nov. 27-Dec. 2 at the Freud; “Aurelia’s Oratorio,” directed and designed by Victoria Thierree Chaplin, Charlie Chaplin’s granddaughter, will play April 9-12 at the Freud.
Sondheim will appear as part of the spoken-word series March 13.
A 50th anniversary fete for the Ash Grove celebration featuring Taj Mahal, Dave Alvin, Mike Seeger, Ry Cooder and others on April 18-19 closes out the roots music series, which starts with Richard Thompson fronting his electric band at Royce on Sept. 28, followed by Los Lobos (Feb. 1) and Arlo Guthrie playing solo (April 17).
Jazz series at Royce Hall includes Ornette Coleman (Sept. 26), the 25th anniversary of the Keith Jarrett Trio (March 5) and the SFJazz Collective playing the compositions of Wayne Shorter (March 21).
The Russian Patriarchate Choir stops at Royce Oct. 22 as part of its first U.S. tour, a highlight of a classical season that includes Yo-Yo Ma with Kathryn Scott (Nov. 17), Deborah Voigt singing the American songbook (Jan. 16) and the Seattle Symphony with violinist Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg.
Nine “world music” concerts kick off Nov. 1 with a Day of the Dead celebration featuring Mariachi Los Camperos de Nati Cano and Eugenia Leon. Among the other bills are Youssou N’Dour (Dec. 1), Sierra Leon’s Refugee All-Stars (Feb. 16) and Angelique Kidjo and Dengue Fever (March 12).
Harold Lloyd’s silent film “Safety Last” will screen with live organ accompaniment on March 9.
