Adaptations hope to hit Broadway stage

Sure, a lot of critics roll their eyes when they hear about another tuner based on a movie property. But that doesn’t mean the pipeline isn’t clogged with upcoming screen-to-stage transfers.

The following is a mere sampling of tuners aiming for Broadway, arranged in three categories: definite (set for the Rialto); developing (heading our way, in various stages of completion); and debatable (musical adaptations once mentioned but lately, perhaps mercifully, fallen off the radar).

Definite
Xanadu (summer)
Young Frankenstein (fall)
The Little Mermaid (fall)
Billy Elliot (2008)
Shrek (2008)
A Catered Affair (2008)

Developing
Catch Me if You Can
Ever After
Cry Baby
Father of the Bride
Nine to Five
Leap of Faith

Debatable
The Hudsucker Proxy
Desperately Seeking Susan
Trading Places
Clueless
Rocky
Network (although an “I’m Mad as Hell” number would make a heckuva showstopper)
