New plays by Richard Greenberg, Donald Margulies and Jose Rivera will be part of South Coast Repertory’s 10th annual Pacific Playwrights Festival.
This year’s fest will take place May 4-6 and feature seven plays, a workshop production, four staged readings and two fully staged world premieres on the Costa Mesa, Calif., theater’s two stages. “My Wandering Boy,” by Julie Marie Myatt, and “System Wonderland,” by David Wiener, will receive their world preems.
Tony winner Greenberg’s “Our Mother’s Brief Affair” will receive a staged reading as will Margulies’ “Shipwrecked! The Amazing Adventures of Louis de Rougemont (as Told by Himself) — An Entertainment” and Rivera’s “Boleros for the Disenchanted.”
Charles MacArthur Award winner John Strand teams up with Emmy Award-winning composer Dennis McCarthy for a staged reading of “An Italian Straw Hat,” a new musical based on the classic farce.
Kenneth Lin’s “Po’ Boy Tango” will receive four workshop performances.
Six of the seven plays in the festival were commissioned by South Coast Rep.
Past festivals have introduced Amy Freed’s “The Beard of Avon,” Lynn Nottage’s “Intimate Apparel,” Nilo Cruz’s “Anna in the Tropics,” Rolin Jones’ “The Intelligent Design of Jenny Chow” and David Lindsay-Abaire’s “Rabbit Hole.”
