Ripley, James to topline ‘Normal’

Greif will direct Off Broadway musical

Alice Ripley (“Side Show”) and Brian d’Arcy James (“The Lieutenant of Inishmore”) topline “Next to Normal,” the new tuner that plays at Off Broadway’s Second Stage Theater starting in January.

Michael Greif (“Rent,” “Grey Gardens”) directs the musical, which has been attracting buzz since a well-received developmental run at the New York Musical Theater Fest in 2005. (Tuner was previously titled “Feeling Electric.”)

With music by Tom Kitt (“High Fidelity”) and book and lyrics by Brian Yorkey, the show centers on a young mother’s struggle with mental illness and treatment.

Creative team for the Second Stage production includes Mark Wendland (set); Jeff Mahshie (costumes); Kevin Adams (lights); and Sergio Trujillo (choreography).

Further casting has yet to be set. “Normal” begins previews at Second Stage on Jan. 16 ahead of a Feb. 13 opening.
