The 11-year-old Broadway production of “Rent” is looking to lure back Rentheads with original cast members Adam Pascal and Anthony Rapp, who reprise the roles they created in a six-week engagement in the show starting July 30.
They’ll join “American Idol” finalist Tamyra Gray, who steps into the role of Mimi on May 29 in a bid to pull in “Idol” fans who may already know the show from fellow “Idol” alum Frenchie Davis’ stint in it. Gray previously appeared on Broadway in “Bombay Dreams” in 2004.
Pascal and Rapp, who first appeared in “Rent” Off Broadway and then followed the show to the Rialto, both starred in the 2005 movie version, which featured most of the stage production’s original cast members. Pascal (“Aida”) received a Tony nom for his Broadway perf.
Grosses for long-runner “Rent,” which received a noticeable bump from the release of the pic, tend to follow the general Rialto fluctuations of tourist-infused biz. The production grossed about $325,000 for the week ended April 29, but a recent strong week in the spring saw biz up to $548,554.
