Lincoln Center announces opening

Opera 'Soldaten' bowing in July 2008

First announced offering of the 2008 Lincoln Center Fest is the Bernd Alois Zimmermann opera “Die Soldaten” (“Soldiers”), to be staged at the Park Avenue Armory in July.

Directed by David Pountney, the monumental production — 40 performers and a 110-piece orchestra — originated in 2006 at Germany’s Ruhr Triennale, during which the show was mounted in a former steelworks. Steven Sloane conducts.

Based on an 18th century play, the 1965 opera “Soldaten” follows a young woman whose relationship with an officer prompts a descent into degradation.

Production runs July 5, 7, 9, 11 and 12 in the drill hall of the Armory. Rest of the annual summer fest’s lineup will be announced in the spring.
