Latino Company takes Center’s stage

L.A. Theater reopens after renovations

The Latino Theater Company announced Wednesday that 14 productions will be presented this year in the renovated Los Angeles Theater Center and a partnership of seven Los Angeles-area performance companies has been formed to create programming down the road.

Having undergone a $4 million renovation, the New LATC now features four legit performance venues of 500, 320, 269 and 99 seats. The house will operate under contractual agreements with Actors Equity.

Latino Theater Company was granted a 20-year lease by the City of Los Angeles Dept. of Cultural Affairs.

The New LATC, whose stated mission is to serve as a “multicultural, multidisciplinary arts center reflecting the cultural landscape of Los Angeles,” opens Oct. 25 with Lonnie Carter’s Obie winner “The Romance of Magno Rubio” and Dan Guerrero’s bio sojourn “Gaytino!” The works run through Oct. 28.

Other productions are the SITI Co.’s “War of the Worlds — The Radio Play (Oct. 26-28), Miami-based Teatro Avante’s staging of Garcia Lorca’s “Yerma” (Nov. 15-18), Leslie Lewis Sword’s solo work “Miracle in Rwanda” (Nov. 15-18), Motti Lerner’s anti-war “Benedictus” (Nov. 29-Dec. 2) and two LTC works, “Melancholia” (Nov. 1-11) and the holiday show “La Virgen De Guadalupe, Dios Inantzin” (Dec. 6-22).

Jose Luis Valenzuela, artistic director of the New LATC, announced a Cultural Roundtable that will bring together Culture Clash, Asian-American Cedar Grove Prods. on Stage, Playwrights Arena, the Robey Theater Company, American Indian Dance Company and the UCLA School of Theater, Dance and Television to create and produce an annual spring season.

When fully operational, the New LATC plans to house an arts museum, cafe and store, as well as a summer arts conservatory for students in grades 9-12.

Los Angeles Theatre Center was created in 1986 on the site of the former home of Security National Bank, located at 514 S. Spring St. In 1992, the L.A. Cultural Affairs Dept. took over management, operating the building as a rental facility until management was turned over to the Latino Theater Company in January 2006.
