A new play by Tony Kushner is set to preem in spring 2009 at Minneapolis’ Guthrie Theater, which has commissioned the script.
Play’s mouthful of a title is “The Intelligent Homosexual’s Guide to Capitalism and Socialism with a Key to the Scriptures.”
Guthrie director Joe Dowling said he began talking to Kushner (“Angels in America,” “Caroline, or Change”) about a commission about six to eight months ago, and he expects to see an initial draft in a couple of months.
Kushner has bandied the title about for a few years with no set plan for writing the play that goes with it. The show will mark the first time Kushner’s stage work addresses gay themes since the Pulitzer-winning “Angels.” According to Dowling, the story of “Intelligent Homosexual’s Guide” will center on a family in Brooklyn.
At the Guthrie, whose new building has three stages, “Guide” will play the 700-seat proscenium theater. (The largest house, which has a thrust stage, seats 1,100, while a studio space seats 200.)
The Guthrie has never before produced a play by Kushner. Dowling said he hopes to present “Guide” as one of several Kushner works during the 2008-09 season.
