“Gutenberg! The Musical!” is not about Steve Guttenberg. But Steve Guttenberg wants you to see the show anyway.
The “Police Academy” thesp is promoting the Off Broadway tuner — a spoofy musical about the father of the printing press — on the radio and online, where you can view a clip of Guttenberg being comically harrassed by two theatergoers (played by “Gutenberg” creators Scott Brown and Anthony King) who are convinced the show is about him.
Guttenberg literally stumbled on the downtown production, which was recently nominated for a Lortel Award for musical.
“I was coming out of a Japanese restaurant with my girlfriend, and I looked across the street and saw the sign,” Guttenberg says. “I thought, is this a joke?”
He saw the show and loved it so much that he approached producer Trevor Brown to help get the word out. A plan was hatched for the online sketch and the radio interviews.
“It’s helping us spread the word about what the show is about — and what it’s not about,” says Brown.
The production is slated to run through June 3, but could extend if demand warrants.
For his part, Guttenberg predicts continued success for the show. “I always believe I have a really great nose for smelling a hit,” he says.
