‘Coram Boy’ likely closing May 27

Pricey play nabbed six Tony nominations

Costly Broadway play “Coram Boy” has announced it will close May 27 unless receipts go up.

After “Journey’s End,” “Coram Boy” is the second play from Boyett Ostar Prods. to throw in the towel since the May 15 announcement of the Tony noms. Like Boyett Ostar’s “Journey’s End,” which shutters June 10, “Coram” nabbed six noms, including two for featured actress (Xanthe Elbrick, Jan Maxwell).

A transfer of a London hit boasting nearly 50 performers including a full choir and musicians, “Coram” garnered mixed reviews and has not done the kind of strong, steady biz it would need to recoup. Production, which opened May 2 and is said to have been capitalized at a whopping $6 million, took in $277,421 and played to 65% capacity auds during the week ending May 13.

Set in 18th century England, “Coram Boy” tells a Dickensian tale of orphans, aristocracy, and child slavery, all punctuated by the music of Handel.

If it closes May 27, Rialto production will have played 18 previews and 30 perfs.

Both “Coram” and “Journey’s End” were plays that had trouble attracting crowds in a spring season unusually crowded with non-musical offerings. Not all the news is bad for plays, however: The revival of “A Moon for the Misbegotten,” mainly passed over by the Tony noms (which overlooked Kevin Spacey but nominated co-star Eve Best), recently recouped its $2.4 million capitalization.
