‘Color Purple’ extends Chicago stay

Regional engagement now ends Sept. 30.

“The Color Purple” has added four weeks to its long Chicago stay. The regional engagement now ends Sept. 30.

Production has had a strong run in Chi since it opened April 17. Chicago incarnation stars original Rialto cast member Felicia P. Fields and Michelle Williams of Destiny’s Child.

The multiple-month engagement reps a strong regional showing for a Broadway tuner — though “Purple” hasn’t quite shown the staying power of “Wicked,” which has had an open-ended production in the Windy City running for two years.

The next stop on the “Purple” tour is San Francisco, where the show begins perfs Oct. 9 for a two-month run.
