Broadway Cares moves competition

Charity org shifts Gypsy of the Year to Dec. 17

Rialto-based charity Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS has reskedded its 19th annual Gypsy of the Year Competition to Dec. 17-18.

Originally planned for this week, the variety show will feature an opening number celebrating the 50th anni of “West Side Story” with original stars including Chita Rivera. Bob Saget (“The Drowsy Chaperone”), Jackie Hoffman and Mary Testa (both in “Xanadu”) host.

Actor-friendly curtain times are 4:30 pm on Dec. 17 and 2:00 pm Dec. 18 at the New Amsterdam Theater.

Fundraising efforts by BC/EFA took a hit from the recent Broadway strike, which came during the semi-annual period when thesps solicit auds for donations at the end of performances.
