Box Office dips on the road

Road Grosses

NEW YORK — The road continued its downhill slide in Week 10 (July 30-Aug. 5). The 13-show slate grossed a total of $13,057,780, a 5.98% drop from the week before.

Blame the allure of the Windy City for part of the decline: Chicago played host to four different touring shows this week, each one taking a bite out of the others’ receipts to the tune of a collective drop of $135,424.

Still, the, er, lion’s share of the dive can be attributed to the Ohio production of “The Lion King.” The show played six perfs at Cleveland’s State Theater, a venue about ¾ the size of the long-running Disney tuner’s last stop at the Fabulous Fox in St. Louis. Between the smaller venue and the short week, the show’s gross receipts fell $606,143.

If the continued downward streak makes it look like a bleak week, bear in mind that last year’s Week 10 grossed about $4.78 million less than 2007.

Even the mighty third company tour of “Wicked,” in Los Angeles, felt the ebb a little, though it’s still the highest-grossing show on the charts. The production closed out the week with $1,621,877.
