World Brief

Milos Forman is back in his native Prague to direct jazz opera “Dobre placena prochazka” (A Well Paid Walk) at the Czech National Theater with his sons, Matej and Petr.

Forman, who will be 75 next month, first directed the opera for Czech TV in 1966 before creative clashes with communism forced him to head west to Hollywood.

The opera, by Jiri Suchy and Jiri Slitr, started rehearsals Monday and premieres April 22.

A plan for Forman to direct Bedrich Smetana’s opera “Dalibor” in the same theater 10 years ago collapsed when his ideas were dismissed as too experimental.

This time he goes to work amid another artistic squabble as National Theater actors have threatened a strike over the micromanagement of their work by the temporary government of Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek.
