Mayer directs Murray-Smith's play

Annette Bening will star on Broadway this spring in “The Female of the Species,” a new play by Joanna Murray-Smith.

Production, which reportedly begins previews April 11 for an April 28 opening, will be helmed by Michael Mayer, who just picked up a Tony for “Spring Awakening.”

Play, about a feminist writer (Bening), will play Los Angeles before Gotham, running at the Geffen Playhouse Feb. 5-March 16.

Bening was last on Broadway in 1988, when she was nommed for a Tony for “Coastal Disturbances.” Murray-Smith’s play “Honour” ran on the Rialto in 1998.

“Female” is produced by David Richenthal and Mary Beth O’Connor.
