7% drop good news for road shows

Road grosses

NEW YORK — The road slipped just under 7% in Week 29 (Dec. 10-16), rolling downhill $958,591 to $12,909,375.

As odd as it sounds, that’s actually good news — the consistently performing Honolulu production of “The Lion King” departed Hawaii and is in layoff until its Jan. 3 opening in Mexico City, so with its dependable million-plus gone from the slate, the 13 remaining shows are averaging slightly higher than they were last week.

The newest production of “Jersey Boys,” now playing in Seattle, broke the box office record it set last week by more than $100,000, and “High School Musical” and “Wicked” in St. Louis both made strong debuts in their new venues.

“Musical” grossed nearly $800,000 in four shows, while “Wicked” topped the charts at the Fox Theater with $1,882,971.
