‘Vanities’ to tryout at Pasadena

Musical version of '70s hit gets pre-Broadway stint

The new musical version of the 1970s Off Broadway hit “Vanities” will receive its pre-Broadway tryout at the Pasadena Playhouse.

Tuner will open Aug. 29 in Pasadena prior to a fall berth on the Rialto. “Vanities” is written by Jack Heifner, who wrote the 1976 play, with music and lyrics by David Kirshenbaum, and is directed by Judith Ivey. Junkyard Dog Prods. and Bartner/Jenkins will co-produce the Pasadena production before taking it to Broadway.

Musical was first produced in summer 2006 at TheaterWorks in the Silicon Valley and then played in Gotham’s National Alliance for Musical Theater fest.

Pasadena Playhouse announced two other additions to its 2008 calendar. John Steinbeck’s “Of Mice and Men,” directed by Paul Lazarus, will open May 9, and George Bernard Shaw’s “Mrs. Warren’s Profession” will open July 4.
