Event finds new sponsors
TOKYO — The Yubari Fantastic Film Festival, canceled in 2006 after its sponsor, the city government, filed for bankruptcy, will be back next February, organizers announced Monday. The revived Yubari fest will be held for five days, with the Hokkaido Shimbun newspaper as a main sponsor. On Tuesday, Yubari Fanta, the org that now runs the festival, launched a support group and fundraising campaign to recruit backers worldwide. Last February, fest supporters held a one-time “Yubari Support Film Festival” in conjunction with a student film fest. Launched in 1990, the Yubari fest became known internationally for its mix of popular and indie cinema, including many pics by up-and-coming Japanese and Asian directors. One fan is Quentin Tarantino, who named the girl assassin in “Kill Bill Vol. 1″ Go-Go Yubari in its honor.
