WB howls for ‘Benighted’

Studio to adapt Kelly's werewolf tale

Patrick Smith Kelly has been tapped to adapt Kit Whitfield’s supernatural thriller novel “Benighted” for producer Graham King and Warner Bros.

Andrew Adamson (“The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe”) is eyeing the project as a possible directing vehicle. King, who acquired the book in 2006, will produce via his new shingle, GK Films. Adamson also will produce. Rick Schwartz is exec producer.

Project is described as an alternate-reality story in which 90% of the population is werewolf, and the minority human population is responsible for keeping the peace during the full moon. The book, published in the U.S. and U.K. by Random House, follows the story of Lola, a member of the police force investigating a series of suspicious murders. The book was released as “Bareback” in the U.K.

King, who produced best picture Oscar winner “The Departed” and “Blood Diamond,” launched GK Films with partner Tim Headington earlier this year. He remains a partner in Initial Entertainment Group. His upcoming projects include the Johnny Depp starrer “Shantaram,” “Sasha’s Story: The Life and Death of a Russian Spy,” “Dark Shadows,” “The Rum Diary” and “The Young Victoria.”Kelly’s credits include the Michael Douglas vehicles “A Perfect Murder” and “Don’t Say a Word.” He has several projects in development, including the Imagine-produced “Ink” for Universal Pictures.
