Vanity Fair film makes friends

Jeff Bridges stars in 'How to Lose Friends'

LONDON — Brit shingle Number 9 Films has secured financing for “How to Lose Friends and Alienate People,” the satirical look at journo Toby Young’s five-year stint at Vanity Fair (Daily Vari-ety, May 18).

U.K. law firm Davenport Lyons brokered the deal with majority funder Aramid Entertainment, which is backed by hedge fund coin.

“Hedge funds are becoming increasingly interested in the film industry, where there can often be great opportunities for impressive gains,” said Davenport Lyons partner Sam Tatton-Brown.

Helmer Bob Weide’s $20 million pic, which stars Simon Pegg, Kirsten Dunst and Jeff Bridges as Vanity Fair’s flamboyant editor Graydon Carter, is also backed by the U.K. Film Council, Film4, InTandem Films and the Irish Film Board.

Stephen Woolley and Elizabeth Karlsen are producing for Number 9 Films.

Film4 optioned rights to the book and developed the project, then brought in Number 9 to produce.

InTandem is handling worldwide sales. Paramount has taken U.K. rights.

Davenport Lyons has previously brokered funding deals with the Royal Bank of Scotland on helmer Ken Loach’s Palme d’Or winner “The Wind That Shakes the Barley” and with Alliance and Leicester for James Bond pic “Casino Royale.”
