‘Tuya’ opens first Cines del Sur

Fest runs June 9-17

MADRID — Chinese drama “Tuya’s Marriage” will open the first edition of the Granada Film Festival Cines del Sur on Saturday.

Wang Quanan’s pic, the winner of this year’s Golden Bear at Berlin, plays out-of-competition.

The new fest in the Andalusian city of Granada will showcase Spanish premieres of pics from Africa, Latin America and Asia.

The 14-film competition features Paraguay-born Paz Encina’s drama “Hamaca Paraguaya,” which won the Fipresci prize in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard last year; Iranian filmmaker Mohsen Makhmalbaf’s Indian-set adventure “Scream of the Ants”; Ozer Kiziltan’s Turkish-German co-production “Takva,” winner of the Fipresci prize in Berlin’s Panorama last February; and British-based Chinese director Xiaolu Guo’s tale “How Is Your Fish Today?”

Granada’s Itineraries Section will showcase 15 films from acclaimed auteurs, such as Abbas Kiarostami’s doc “Roads,” Bahman Ghobadi’s San Sebastian 2006 Golden Shell winner “Half Moon” and Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s Turkish drama “Climates,” winner of a 2006 Cannes Fipresci nod.

A jury composed of Algerian actress Nadia Kaci and helmers Jafar Panahi, from Iran, Burkina Fasso’s Idrissa Ouedraogo, India’s K.R. Mohanan and China’s Zhang Yuan will decide the winners.

Awards include the Golden Alhambra, worth Euros 50,000 ($67,300) for the pic’s producer, the Silver Alhambra ($40,380) for best director, and a Bronze Alhambra ($26,920), earmarked for a film’s distribution in Spain.

Other fest highlights include a retrospective of Egyptian film legend Youssef Chahine and a showcase of the latest generation of Chinese directors.

Fest runs June 9-17.
