Tentpoles not terrific

Top 10 films earn eight nominations

As usual, there’s a discrepancy between the global box office winners and Oscar.

The top 10 films at the worldwide B.O. for 2006 only earned eight nominations. And the year’s top film, “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest,” pulled in four of them.

“Pirates” was followed — at the box office and in noms — by “Cars,” with two. “Superman Returns” and “Happy Feet” nabbed one each.

Shut out were B.O. behemoths “X-Men: The Last Stand,” “The Da Vinci Code,” “Ice Age: The Meltdown,” “Over the Hedge,” “Casino Royale” and “Talladega Nights.”
