Streep’s ‘Dark’ lights up Hawaii fest

Lin's 'Game,' Gibney's 'Taxi,' to also screen

Cinema meets the surf as the Hawaii Film Festival unspools its 27th edition Oct. 18-28.

Some 150 feature films, documentaries, shorts and animated works will be showcased, including Sundance fest winner “Dark Matter,” starring Meryl Streep and Aidan Quinn in a drama based on the true story of a Chinese student struggling in the U.S.

Lineup of U.S. pics also includes the comedy “Finishing the Game,” helmed by Justin Lin; ‘Jump!,’ a doc about the USA Jump Rope Nationals; Alex Gibney’s “Taxi to the Darkside,” which examines torture practices in war zones; and the animated tale “Year of the Fish,” helmed by David Kaplan.

Fest continues its focus on promoting Asian and Pacific films and docs abroad, and this year’s roster includes the Japanese comedy “Dai Nippon Jin,” with Hitoshi Matsumoto, and Chinese thriller “Eye in the Sky,” among others.

Event also promises more Hollywood flavor for fans. “We have created more opportunities to interact and meet the celebrities,” said executive director Chuck Boller.

Festival, which is expecting more than 700,000 attendees, will screen pics at the historic Hawaii Theater, the Dole Cannery and on Waikiki beach.
