Spyglass nabs ‘The Game’ rights

Dan Weiss will adapt Neil Strauss' dating book

Spyglass has picked up bigscreen rights to Neil Strauss’ dating tome “The Game,” which Dan Weiss will adapt.

Project, set up at Sony with Michael De Luca last year, will now be financed by Spyglass and produced by Depth of Field. Depth of Field partner Chris Weitz was originally going to adapt the book, but then he got pulled back into direct “The Golden Compass” after Anand Tucker departed the project (Daily Variety, May 8, 2006).

Book recounts “an average frustrated chump’s” attempts to become the world’s best pickup artist with the help of professional seduction experts.

Depth of Field producer Andrew Miano described the tale as one that happily married men — and women — can relate to, noting that Weiss originally received it from his spouse.

He said Weiss, one of the original writers they talked to about the project, never lost his passion for it amid shifts in the development process.

“His perseverance and love for the project continued to impress me,” Miano said.

Weiss has done a series of rewrites, including for “Halo” and Peter Weir’s “Pattern Recognition.” He also penned the HBO pilot “Game of Thrones” with David Benioff (Daily Variety, Jan. 17).

Gary Barber, Roger Birnbaum and Jonathan Glickman are producing for Spyglass, and Chris and Paul Weitz are producing with Miano for Depth of Field.

Spyglass has several projects in the works, including “27 Dresses” and Lasse Hallstrom’s remake of “Anthony Zimmer.”

Weiss is repped by CAA and Management 360.
