Arts fest embraces movies
ROME — Andy Garcia, Paul Mazursky and Terry Gilliam will be honored by the 50th Spoleto Festival, bestowing a Hollywood glow to the prominent event dedicated to opera, dance, drama — and now cinema — in the Umbrian hilltown.
Garcia, whose Cuba-set directorial debut “The Lost City” will unspool in Spoleto, will also perform in the ancient hamlet’s Roman theater with his 15-member Cineson All-Stars jazz band.
Among other Mazursky-helmed works to be seen in Spoleto will be “Yippee,” a recent docu about the religious celebrations of Hasidic Jews in a Ukraine village.
Founded by late opera composer Gian Carlo Menotti, Spoleto is visited each summer by nearly a half-million people. The upcoming edition — which runs June 29-July 15 — will be the first following Menotti’s death in February.
