Next edition runs Aug. 23-Sept. 3

MONTREAL — Serge Losique’s Montreal World Film Festival will receive some financial support from Quebec film agency Sodec for the first time in three years.

Sodec announced late Wednesday that it will provide cash to the 31st edition of the Montreal World Film Festival, but the agency did not disclose how much.

Losique is prexy of the fest, whose next edition runs Aug. 23-Sept. 3.

Sodec will give a total of C$800,000 ($750,000) to eight Quebec film festivals, including the Festival du Nouveau Cinema, Cinemania (a popular Montreal fest focused on screening French films with English subtitles), the Montreal Asian and genre film festival Fantasia.

Sodec coin is the first for Fantasia.

Under its new rules, Sodec is allowed to give a maximum of $330,000 to any one film festival.

Both Sodec and federal film funder Telefilm Canada had cut off all financial aid to Losique’s fest for the past two years in an effort to starve the event into submission.

The two agencies had created a rival festival, the ill-fated New Montreal FilmFest, which went bankrupt after only one edition in fall 2005.

Telefilm Canada has yet to announce whether it will dole out money to Losique’s festival this year.
