Wingclips' film scenes include 'Nacho,' Spidey
In the morality wars, Hollywood’s film fare is used to taking heavy fire. But now it seems that even Spider-Man and “Nacho Libre” have something to offer in the realm of spiritual enlightenment. For $12 a month, Wingclips.com offers up inspirational film clips on a variety of topics ranging from anger and despair to pride and even sex. Not surprisingly, the site is big on such recent titles as “Amazing Grace” (touching on the themes of abolition, redemption and the sanctity of life), “Sweet Land” (marriage, accountability), “The World’s Fastest Indian” (faith, courage) and “Bridge to Terabithia” (strength and helping). The surprise is that inspiration can be found even in R-rated films and less obvious choices like “Spider-Man 3″ and “Nacho Libre.” Latter has three scenes on the site, including a comic baptism tagged to the themes of atheism and salvation. “We will only make WingClips available from movies that do not contradict Judeo-Christian values, and we will strive to maintain a level of integrity that can be trusted,” the site notes. But, it adds, “We highly recommend whenever possible that pastors and leaders preview the entire movie before publicly showing WingClips from this site.” Site was launched in January by former pastor Mitch Irion, who signed licensing deals with the studios for use of the clips in exchange for including a click-thru feature for purchase of the DVD of the films. “That makes it a win-win situation,” says creative director Jeremy Paul. And Wingclips.com is aimed specifically at helping preachers and teachers, who can use the site for free. “For better or worse, movies form a lasting impression on our hearts and minds,” site says. “Studies suggest that three days after an event, people retain only 10% of what they heard from an oral presentation, 35% from a visual presentation, and an overwhelming 65% from combination of a visual and oral presentation.” In other words, “Nacho Libre’s” Jack Black in a friar’s outfit just might keep the congregation from nodding off on Sundays.
