Shochiku, Universal fly ‘Eagle’

Shochiku will distrib “Midnight Eagle,” a suspense/action pic co-produced by Universal Pictures Japan, it was announced Monday.

Pic stars Takao Osawa (“Helen the Baby Fox” “Crying Out Love, in the Center of the World”) as a photographer who witnesses the crash of a U.S. stealth plane and becomes involved in an international hunt for its lethal secret payload. The helmer is Izuru Narushima, (“Fly, Daddy, Fly”); co-stars are Yuko Takeuchi (“Ring”) and Hiroshi Tamaki (“Waterboys”).

Based on the eponymous novel by Tetsuo Takashima, pic has been in production since January with the full cooperation of Japan’s Defense Agency and Ground and Air Self-Defense forces. The $10 million budget is being supplied by a consortium led by Universal, while Shochiku will release the pic on Nov. 23 in its nationwide theater chain and rep it internationally.
