'NC-17' to serve as directing debut
J.H. Wyman’s Frequency Films is expanding by adding former CBS Par TV exec VP Reid Shane as a partner and setting up film and TV projects.Frequency has secured $10 million in funding from Philippe Rousselet’s Les Films de la Suane (“Lords of War”) to produce “NC-17,” a teen noir thriller written by Wyman that also will serve as the scribe’s helming debut. Shane, Wyman and Rousselet will serve as producers on the pic, which is set to begin lensing by year’s end. On the TV front, Frequency and 20th Century Fox TV are developing the hourlong script “Maps of the Underworld” for Fox Broadcasting. Project is being geared for the net’s early development slate of projects for the second half of the 2007-08 season. As for Shane, he and Wyman first connected during the production of the Wyman-created skein “Keen Eddie,” which Par produced. They later collaborated on the Wyman-penned Fox pilot “13 Graves,” which was produced last year. Wyman said he and Shane share similar creative visions, while Shane also brings extensive hands-on knowledge of both TV and film productions. In addition to his decade on the Par lot, he’s done stints in production for both Roger Corman and Kushner Locke. On the film side, Wyman said he’s been quietly writing a number of spec projects. First out of the gate is “NC-17,” which revolves around four 17-year-old students who come together to mastermind a crime. Over at Fox Broadcasting, “Maps” focuses on a female undercover cop in San Francisco who’s determined to bring down a noted crime family, in the process exacting revenge on the people who’ve tried to kill her family. Wyman, who calls the potential pilot “a soap with guns,” said he expects to turn in a draft of the script to 20th this week. “It’s really fun, but the concepts are relevant,” he said. “Maps” stems from Wyman’s deal to write a pair of premium scripts for 20th. If greenlit, it would be his third project for Fox Broadcasting. Wyman and Frequency are repped by CAA.
