‘Secret’ opens strong in China

Romantic drama is Chou's first

Taiwanese warbler Jay Chou threw a thank-you party for his fans in Beijing after his directorial debut, “Secret,” became the mainland’s top movie last week with B.O. of 26 million yuan ($3.4 million) over 10 days.

Weekend takings came in at nearly $400,000.

Party gifts included school uniforms worn by the lead actors in the films, according to state media. The uniforms have becoming extremely hip among teenagers around southeast Asia.

China Film said pic, which was produced by Edko with investment from Avex Asia, took in $793,156 on its first day and $1.3 millionin its first three days.

B.O. was particularly strong considering it had to compete with strong foreign pics such as “Transformers.”

In Hong Kong, the romantic drama brought in $900,000 on 33 screens in its first nine days. Weekend box office figures nearly hit US$180,000, bringing the total to $1.03 million.

In Singapore, pic had $270,000 on 22 screens for three days with weekend takings at almost $200,000; and Taiwan brought in $125,000 on its first day on 50 screens with weekend numbers at $242,000.
