Brown to star in basketball film

Screen Gems has acquired the Charles Murray spec script “Phenom,” and quickly set singer-actor Chris Brown to star. Bob Teitel and George Tillman Jr. will produce.

Brown will play a standout high school basketball player who goes pro as the press discovers he’s the illegitimate son of an aging NBA star. Father and son head for a collision course as their teams meet in the NBA playoffs.

Plan is to be in production later this year.

The 17-year-old Brown is making his third film for Screen Gems. He had a small role in “Stomp the Yard” and is part of the ensemble “This Christmas,” to be released in November. Screen Gems topper Clint Culpepper is out to directors.
