Scorsese sets up cinema foundation

Organization will preserve pics

CANNES — Martin Scorsese announced Tuesday the creation of the World Cinema Foundation, a not-for-profit org dedicated to the preservation and restoration of neglected films, which he called a “dream come true.”

Founded by Scorsese, the foundation supports and encourages efforts to preserve and share films that are no longer shown or available on video. According to Scorsese, 90% of American silent films are gone.

With the advent of the World Cinema Foundation, Scorsese hopes filmmakers from differing territories will continue to re-influence each other with new kinds of movies. Scorsese also anticipates the foundation will promote “less feelings of strangeness” between nations.

Scorsese was joined at the Palais press conference by the World Cinema Foundation’s board of advisers, who include: Fatih Akin, Souleymane Cisse, Guillermo Del Toro, Stephen Frears, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, Abbas Kiarostami, Ermanno Olmi, Cristi Puiu, Walter Salles, Abderrahmane Sissako, Elia Suleiman, Bertrand Tavernier, Wim Wenders and Wong Kar Wai.

“To preserve film preserves cultural identities,” Inarritu said.
