Zurer, Goldblum, Dafoe to act in adaptation
A collection of high-profile thesps have joined the cast of Holocaust drama “Adam Resurrected.”Casting was unveiled Friday by producers Ehud Bleiberg and Werner Wirsing at a reception at the Maritim Hotel in Berlin. Ayelet Zurer (“Munich”), Moritz Bleibtreu (“Run Lola Run”), Hana Laslo (“Free Trade Zone”), Joachim Krol (“Maybe, Maybe Not”), Evgenia Dudina (“Love and Dance”), Juliane Koehler (“The Downfall”), Moni Moshonov (“Every Time We Say Goodbye”) and Veronica Ferres (“No Snow”) will star alongside Jeff Goldblum and Willem Dafoe in the drama, helmed by Paul Schrader. Schrader is head of the Berlin Intl. Film Festival jury and Dafoe is a member of the jury. The veteran helmer was typically cryptic when describing the project. “It’s the story of a man who once was a dog who meets a dog who once was a boy.” Pic is actually based on acclaimed author Yoram Kaniuk’s novel. The film tells the story of Adam Stein, a former circus entertainer spared the gas chamber so that he might entertain thousands of other Jews as they marched to their deaths. Goldblum will play title role. Bleiberg is producing “Adam Resurrected” with Werner Wirsing, head of German distributor EMS/3L (“Monster,” “Old Boy,” “Machinist”). For Bleiberg pic is a labor of love. “It’s the first time you have Americans, Israelis and Germans working together on a film about the Holocaust,” he said. “We have Germans playing Holocaust survivors. It’s never been done before.” It’s Bleiberg’s second shot at a Kaniuk novel. Israeli producer previously made “Himmo, King of Jerusalem” in 1987. Earlier pic was an entirely Israeli production but Bleiberg, who has spent 14 years working in the U.S., was keen for the new project to have international coin. “This couldn’t have been made as only an Israeli film,” he said. “It needed to be an international project. It’s been the passion of my life.” Ulf Israel (“Gate to Heaven”) is executive producing with Noah Stollman penning the screenplay. “Adam Resurrected” will be shot in Germany, Romania and Israel with principal photography slated to begin in March. Bleiberg Entertainment is financing the film along with EMS/3L, and handling worldwide sales. Pic has already been sold to Germany, Israel, Brazil and Greece. Bleiberg launched Los Angeles-based Bleiberg Entertainment in September 2005. Wirsing’s E-M-S New Media was the first producer and supplier of DVDs in Germany.
