Bollywood star guilty of possessing weapons

HONG KONG — Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt was jailed Tuesday after a court found him guilty of possessing weapons used in the 1993 terror attacks in Mumbai.

Dutt, who was cleared of conspiracy charges, was sentenced to six years and fined $600 on the possession charges. Judge P.D. Kode said that the evidence against Dutt was strong and that he was not entitled to lenient treatment. Dutt is expected to appeal.

The star, who initially argued that he bought the rifle and a pistol to defend his family, spent 18 months in jail during the early investigations and has been free on bail since 1995.

Dutt is the last and highest-profile defendant to be sentenced in the decade-long trials that followed the bombing of Mumbai’s financial district. The anti-terrorism court has sentenced 96 people, mostly on charges of conspiracy, preparing the bombs or leaving explosives-laden cars and scooters; 12 received death sentences.

The 48-year-old star is one of India’s top 10 actors and recently appeared in hits “Eklavya the Royal Guard” and “Lage raho munnabhai.”
