Road to Mandalay

Producer Schulman tapped as president

Oscar-winning producer Cathy Schulman has been named president of Mandalay Pictures. Mandalay Entertainment Group chairman-CEO Peter Guber announced that she will also oversee the company’s new label Mandalay Independent.

Schulman was a producer of “Crash,” last year’s best picture winner, and also produced “The Illusionist.”

She will oversee development, production, distribution and marketing of Mandalay’s film slate.

Creation of the indie label will allow Mandalay to expand into production of smaller pics.

“It’s our shared vision to produce both large-scale and independent pictures that will be self-distinguishing in today’s busy and competitive landscape,” Schulman said. “I am deeply committed to discovering and supporting filmmakers of vision while making Mandalay a continued home for film talent looking to make a difference in the worldwide motion picture landscape.”

Mandalay has a first-look distribution pact with Universal, and Guber said it has recently renewed its financing deals.

On Schulman’s hire, he added, “We plan to support her with additional capital for executives and resources.”

Recent pics from Mandalay include “Into the Blue,” “The Jacket,” and “Beyond Borders.” Other films it has financed include “Les Miserables,” “The Color Purple,” “Die Another Day,” “Batman” and “Rain Man.”

Mandalay Entertainment Group also produces television programming, including current Showtime skein “Brotherhood” and a recently completed block of Nora Roberts novel adaptations for Lifetime.

Through its major investment in Mandalay Mosaic, which owns the Dick Clark Co., it is involved in kudocast productions, including the Golden Globes and the American Music Awards.

Schulman was most recently a partner in Bulls Eye Entertainment, where she produced “Thumbsucker,” and she is wrapping a documentary about Sudan that she produced with Don Cheadle for Warner Independent and Participant Prods.

Prior to Bulls Eye, Schulman held posts at APG, the production arm of AMG; Savoy Pictures; Goldwyn Pictures; and Sovereign Pictures.
